A man who police said is responsible for the death of a pedestrian on Miami Beach appeared before a judge Friday. 

Joao Paulo Escudero Mauro, of Brazil, is charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in the crash, which happened early Thursday. 

Russell Knudson, 45, was loading his bicycle into a friend’s car on Collins Avenue and 39th Street when, police said, Escudero Mauro lost control of his Mercedes SUV and swerved onto the sidewalk, hitting Knudson. 

Police said Escudero Mauro smelled of alcohol and admitted he had been drinking earlier in the night. 

Escudero Mauro was given $245,000 bond plus house arrest, and he must surrender his passport.
